Germany, 1971: Erika (Anna Schudt) is actually completely overwhelmed by her work in the butchery of husband Kurt (Christian Erdmann), the education of three common children and additional obligations, which brings the village life, as her doctor also revealed that she is pregnant again. Another baby is the last thing she needs now, and so she decides to drive to her sister Charlotte (Alwara Höfels) to Cologne and let the baby abortively secretly abort. Since there are complications during the surgery and Erika can only be rescued, but her husband still learns from the matter. It comes to a huge dispute, in which another topic is the future of daughter Ulrike (Lene Oderich). Without further ado Erika then packs her things and moves with her children to Charlotte. But at a time when legislation inevitably makes her dependent on her husband, she is denied a self-determined new beginning. Erika decides to do something to change that ..

Eva is a passionate teacher. After the death of her mother, she tries to find a new direction in life. Then Sevda, a Turkish girl, joins her class. She is smart, self-confident and wears a headscarf out of conviction. She demands her right to religious freedom without restriction. Rolf, the principal of the grammar school, believes that peace at school is at risk and wants to ban Sevda from wearing the headscarf. Eva, on the other hand, wants to take the more sustainable path and persuade her. But then the conflict at the school comes to a head.

Dr. Benjamin Brinkmann, houseman/intern in the "Schwarzwaldklinik" (Black Forest Clinic/Hospital), experiences by his wife, Dr. Sophie Brinkmann, from the rumor that the clinic/hospital was sold. After he sees, how the personnel is concerned because of the rumor, Benjamin goes to his superior, Prof. Köhler. By him he experiences that the clinic/hospital was actually sold to a private investor, Karl Seeberg, who wants to close the clinic/hospital and make from it a senior home. Benjamin also informs his half brother, in the meantime Prof. Dr. Udo Brinkmann, about the problem. Udo sees the only chance in convincing Karl Seeberg that the hospital is on a long-term basis more profitable. Former auxiliary Michael "Mischa" Burgmann can help with Udo former "Oberschwester" (senior nursing officer/ head nurse) Hildegard Vogt, after she suffered a lumbago.
